Dental hygienists open their hearts for your teeth

ST-EUGENE – For the second consecutive year, registered dental hygienists across Ontario will be giving a different type of gift this Valentine’s Day weekend.
On Saturday, February 13, they will open their hearts and clinics to provide oral health care to the public, at no cost, for those who may be financially unable to receive dental hygiene care or who have difficulty accessing dental hygiene treatment.
“Gift from the Heart” is a one-day volunteer event to bring awareness to the overwhelming number of Ontarians unable to afford oral health care.
It is also a day to bring awareness to the public that oral health is more than just teeth and gum care, and is the key to your overall health.
“Your dental hygienist is the expert for preventive oral health care,” said Linda Jamieson, president of the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario.
Since September 2007, dental hygienists have been legislated to provide dental hygiene care outside the traditional dental office, which gives the public the right to choose their healthcare provider.
